This Year's Festival
Purbeck Folk Festival announces top names from across the British and American "folk-ish" scenes including Karine Polwart, Carrie Rodriguez, Show of Hands and Dizraeli and The Small Gods.
Set to enjoy its fifth year this August Bank Holiday, the festival which recently won 'Best Countryside Festival Award' takes place on a sheep farm in the Dorset hills, one sleepy field away from the English Channel. "The festival has grown steadily in four years to just under 2000 weekend tickets, so we are able to book more top name folk acts" says director Paul Burke. "Traditional, contemporary, quiet, totally kickin' - there's something for everyone."
The highlights of this year's festival include multi BBC Radio 2 folk award winners Karine Polwart and Show of Hands - both the cream of contemporary folk singers and undeniably one of the strongest current forces in acoustic music: urban shanty hip-hop beat poet Dizraeli and his seven-piece band, the Small Gods; celtic diddly virtuoso Urban Folk Quartet; and folk song writers Martha Tilston and Pete Moreton.
From across the pond, Carrie Rodriguez, the charismatic Mexican-Texan fiddle-singer, headlines Friday night. More American style banjo/fiddliness includes banjo-God, Leon Hunt and his n-tet, the Carrivick Sisters to name a couple. For dancing galore from the deep south, Louisianna Cajun band Sarah Savoy and the Francadians play with a cajun dance workshop in the afternoon. And if you like your dancing, besides all the freestyle, Purbeck has two young fun, ceilidh bands booked to show you how.
And it's not all for the grown-ups, Purbeck Folk Festival has a whole weekend of great entertainment for the kids too. This year sees the addition of a storytelling tent and cinema tent too
There's now a tradition of giving the young ones a chance - the line-up always features finalists from Radio 2's Young Folk Awards, and the best vibrant young national and internationally known artists as well as a few oldies and the best of Dorset's local music scene.
Purbeck Folk Festival is focussed on quality music and we're lucky to have a diverse audience from all different backgrounds brought together through their love of good music and everyone shares a respect for the performers which has made Purbeck the festival loved by artists and festival goers alike. The overall festival atmosphere is fantastic and this year sees Purbeck's fringe events growing with even more workshops and crafts throughout the day for adults and folk kids.
The festival campsite is vast with a tents-only field and a campers and caravans field where tents and vehicles can be parked fairly close together. Camping is free with weekend tickets from 10am Friday to Monday afternoon. Overnight camping is available for day ticket-holders at £10 adult (£5 youth and children 3-10 years), payable on arrival at the site. Camping is available Thursday 22 August at same price for all festival ticket holders.
