The Isle of Wight Zoo is a highly popular animal attraction. It is a venue not to be missed during a stay on the Island and is well worth crossing the Solent to visit. Situated a stones throw from the sandy beaches of Sandown, this zoo offers a wholesome and entertaining experience for visitors of all ages. As the home of TV's Tiger Island series, naturally, tigers and other big cat species are what the zoo is best renowned for but the ever-expanding population of endearing lemurs are fast becoming a favourite for the visitors too.
Committed to outdoor learning, the zoo prides itself on providing unique opportunities for engaging with visitors. The experienced animal care and education team work together to ensure that those with an appetite for knowledge are well fed with information and presented with a stimulating and friendly environment in which to discover more about the natural world.
In addition to daily interactive sessions and periodic events, the zoo also offers a unique 'Hands on Wildlife' scheme which includes tiger milk feeding encounters, and an all new 'Love Me? Adopt Me!' animal adoption scheme.
The Zootique Café is the hot-spot of the zoo for lazy midmorning
coffee breaks, scrumptious lunch-time snacks or cosy afternoon teas and toasted tea cakes. Lashings of killer ice-creams to cool the hottest of days are served with a smile from the Zootique Café Pavilion. The Zootique Shop is the place to hunt down a special wildlife orientated gift or a personalized souvenir. Children's play area available.
Coming in 2009: Zoolittle Farm; the PLUTO Exhibit and Tearoom; Picnic area and Sweet Shop; Children's Activity Zone.
The Isle of Wight Zoo can be found at Yaverland Seafront, Sandown, Isle of Wight, PO36 8QB.
Sandown is clearly sign posted from all the main towns and ferry terminals. For visitors travelling without their own transport there is a good bus service throughout most of the Island to Sandown town centre. There is also a rail service from Ryde Pier Head to Sandown Station. The Zoo is a short distance from the town centre along the seafront towards the white cliff end of the bay. A seasonal dotto train provides a frequent service bringing visitors from a variety of points in the town to the Zoo's entrance. An open topped bus service links other parts of the Island to the zoo.
